Chemistry meets alchemy. Winemaking, fine art, and design all found their corollaries during the course of this project, a fruitful collaborative effort.

21 Grams is an artistic collaboration between Waters Winery, Gramercy Cellars and modern artist Makoto Fujimura. Each year this 100-case bottling is blended from the best lots of Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon from each winery's cellar. The label changes with each vintage, and features one of Fujimura’s abstract paintings using the Japanese Nihonga technique: pigments derived from minerals and other natural sources applied to handmade paper.

Our packaging and collateral designs pay homage to the ethereal, artistic nature of this partnership. We wanted the wine’s dedicated site to be an extension of the printed work.

This simple yet evocative site lets visitors easily navigate through each vintage’s tasting notes and ratings, as well as Fujimura’s artist's notes about the creation of each piece. The site is easily scalable as the years progress and this talented artistic partnership continues to bear fruit.

21 Grams sells out every year well before shipping and is available only to mailing-list members. Sign up here to get on the list.

“We have worked with Alimat, Inc. for three years and it’s our hope that the relationship continues indefinitely. For our brands Waters and 21 Grams, they have been exhaustively involved in multiple facets of business—web site and e-newsletter design, label and collateral design and copy editing.

Two of their most impressive functions are accurately capturing our desired look and feel, and the associated project management and coordination of timelines. They are incredibly responsive, flexible, versatile and handle changes in design or direction quickly and efficiently. As a result of their harmonious team efforts and skill, the quality of our branding is consistent and impressive. It’s a privilege (and fun!) to collaborate with them.”
